About Us Mathnasium

In the 1990s, education industry pioneers Peter Markovitz and David Ullendorff recognized that to truly be successful in school and in life, students need a solid understanding of mathematics. There was a vast disconnect, though, between students’ learning skills and the math curriculum they were taught in school.                                                                                              To address that gap, they founded Mathnasium — a math-only learning center committed to providing the world’s best instruction. Their goal: teach children how to think, with the skills to succeed in math and the confidence to achieve their academic potential. After an exhaustive search, they found the perfect person to help them achieve their vision: Larry Martinek, a beloved educator, teacher trainer, and curriculum consultant. Larry and Mathnasium’s expert team spent years refining the most powerful teaching methods and materials into the comprehensive, industry-leading Mathnasium Method™. The trio opened the first Mathnasium Learning Center in Los Angeles in late 2002 and began franchising in 2003.

Huge Demand + Weak Competition = Enormous Market Opportunity

Ideal market opportunities are not made from huge demand alone. There is enormous demand for consumer electronics, but that’s not reason enough to get into the consumer electronics business. Instead, ideal market opportunities are shaped by enormous demand not currently met by corresponding supply.

“Math sense” is what matters most

Almost all students can excel in math if they receive the right instruction. Math is unlike music, art, dance, or athletics. These pursuits may require a specific talent for a person to excel. Math, on the other hand, does not require special wiring. Without a doubt, “math sense” can be taught by an education franchise.

Positive reviews equal positive results

We all know the businesses that excel are those that provide better than expected customer service and experiences. These companies build brands and praiseworthy reputations to go along with them. Mathnasium centers are where countless success stories have taken place – seeing children progress, change their attitudes, increase their sense of value and, ultimately, develop a brighter outlook for the future. The results continue to lead parents to tell other parents and students to tell other students about all that Mathnasium has to offer.

A life-changing experience for every child we teach

We firmly believe that virtually any kid can be good at math. Different from physical limitations which might prevent a child from excelling in sports or the arts, a majority of children possess the ability to understand the relationship between numbers. They just need the right instruction – they need to be taught math the way that makes sense to them.

Understanding – the gateway to mastery

Math is based on logic, and when students understand why they’re doing something instead of simply memorizing the mechanics of problem-solving, retention levels increase dramatically. For that reason, “just because” is never an explanation. At Mathnasium, the why is just as important as the how.

The stronger the foundation, the more you can build

Math is a sequential subject, and what students learn today builds upon the math they have learned in the past. With the process of learning math requiring a continual expansion of existing skills, it is imperative that students build from a solid foundation – the type of foundation we work to build at Mathnasium.

The Mathnasium Method – An individualized approach

The strength of the Mathnasium Method™ lies in its individualized approach. As no two students come to us at the same skill level, our approach includes a personal skills assessment designed to tell us where strengths and weaknesses lie for each student. We meet them right where they are and move forward from there.

Mathnasium@home

Mathnasium@home allows students to get live Mathnasium instruction from anywhere with an internet connection.

Mathnasium@home features:

  • The same Mathnasium Method™ used in our centers: real-time, face-to-face learning, with the same instructors.
  • Additional customer revenue: the same subscription fees as in-center enrollments.
  • Safety and security, with the comfort and convenience customers, love.

The right instruction makes all the difference

Instructors are the heart and soul of education and the foundation of what we are able to achieve at Mathnasium. All our instructors should be like “that one teacher” who we will always remember for their caring, their skill, their passion, their belief in our potential – and their devotion to helping us achieve it.

We diagnose like doctors

Imagine going to a doctor who operated without first performing x-rays and other tests to determine the actual issue. The results would not be good. In general, education seems to lack process, which doesn’t bode well for a student trying to learn math. For this reason, our instructors are given a method that enables them to assess what children know and don’t know. Identifying gaps is the first step to closing them. Once a “diagnosis” has been made we take a systemized approach that includes creating a customized learning plan with consistent follow-ups and reassessments to ensure the desired results are achieved.

We don’t compete with the school curriculum

Our methodology was designed to be compatible with, and complementary to, everything students learn in school. We know this because the Mathnasium Method™ was developed by a math teacher on a mission.

But I don’t know how to teach math!

Don’t worry. If you don’t have a teaching background, you can still excel as a Mathnasium franchisee. In fact, the backgrounds of our ideal franchisees vary greatly – from engineers and accountants to teachers and homemakers, and everything in between. They all successfully run an education franchise.

Mathnasium franchise training was designed to level the playing field. We teach you all that you need to know about running a business that deals with math instruction.

What experience do I need?

We understand that the thought of first-time business ownership is intimidating, but that’s the beauty of the franchise model – a proven operating system has already been established. All you have to do is follow the path.

Initial Franchise Training

Once you sign on as a franchisee, you’ll gain access to an abundance of online training materials. You’ll also spend time getting to know the business with us in Los Angeles, California, at Mathnasium’s corporate headquarters. Here you’ll learn financial planning for your math franchise and take education courses in the Mathnasium Method™.

You’ll also be exposed to our apprenticeship program in a live environment with kids present. We try to plan this as close as possible to the opening of your center (within six weeks).

Ongoing Training and Support

Throughout the life of your franchise agreement, support will be there whenever you need it. In fact, as soon as you complete your initial training, you’ll be assigned a Start-up Specialist (SUS) who will assist you through your location’s grand opening making sure you have all that you need for a successful launch. Then, once your math franchise is up and running, you’ll be assigned a Field Business Consultant (FBC) who will regularly visit your location and provide expert advice for how to grow and maintain your business.

You’ll also have the advantage of regional training twice a year and an annual convention every July with Mathnasium franchisees from around the world. These conventions are invaluable opportunities to connect with your peers and share successes and tips.
